WESTLIFE: NO 1 ALBUMS ARE MORE IMPORTANT

WESTLIFE have given up caring about No 1 singles, and their boss Simon Cowell agrees.

Despite racking up 14 chart-toppers over the decade, the Irish lads – set to crash the top 10 with new album Where We Are – believe the life of the old-fashioned single is over.

Shane Filan, 30, said: “Getting the album to No 1 is more important than having a No 1 single for us and Simon agreed.

He pushed us to make a great album. He agreed we needed to up our game and not to record as many covers. We needed to get back to making great pop music.”

The quartet’s new opus features a more mature pop sound, an idea masterminded by the X Factor guru, 50.

Shane explained: “Simon got us in with everyone we wanted to work with. And we only hired producers we haven’t worked with before.

“It shows in the quality of the music and as a result, a lot of the songs are more up-tempo.

“Simon and Louis Walsh think it’s the best album we’ve ever made.”

Westlife are back after a year out from music but they believe that in that time Simon has become even more powerful.

Shane said: “It seemed impossible for him to get any bigger. But we look at him as a record boss rather than this global superstar.

“We tease him that Westlife was always his first real success and that he made his first major millions off of us.”

Where We Are is out now.
