A Catch-Up With Nicky

Nicky's written a blog exclusively for Westlife fans to update you on what's been going on with the band in the past week.

Hey guys, this last week has been absolutely incredible for us four... we have gone from our lengthy break and downtime into the buzz and chaos that only the music world can bring!

X Factor performance to an early GMTV slot and what a laugh we had doing the webchat having had only four hours sleep! We've also started our press campaign this week with numerous phone interviews and photo shoots with Heat and Cosmopolitan magazines all coming out soon..

Our radio promo has begun too with lots of interviews around UK and Ireland and we head off on a radio tour next week to some major UK cities, all will be revealed!

Us four lads back on our tour bus now, that's gonna be funny! Final video edit is coming soon and album artwork is looking amazing too… so as you can see we are most definitely back with a bang and it feels great…

Westlife At Michael Jackson Premiere

The boys will be heading to the West End tonight to attend the premiere of the new Michael Jackson movie This Is It.

They'll head to the Odeon Leicester Square after doors open at 11.30pm, with the film starting at 1am, so head on down if you want to get a sneak peek of the boys! The screening will take place at the same time as other global premieres across 15 different countries, with the LA footage shown on screens in the gardens alongside celebrity interviews and a performance by Diversity.

Nicky Byrne: Louis Walsh is coping with Stephen Gately's death

Westlife's Nicky Byrne said manager Louis Walsh was coping with the death of Stephen Gately.

Speaking at the Leicester Square premiere of This Is It, Nicky said: "Louis is doing as well as expected, he was understandably devastated, it was so shocking.

"He has thrown himself into his work. He's been calling us every day regarding our single and video and been dealing with X Factor."

'Where We Are' is the tenth album from the hugely successful Westlife. Includes the single "What About Now" plus 12 more new tracks.

Other songs on the album include "Shadows" - which was written by Ryan Tedder and AJ McLean (Who have written for the likes of The Backstreet Boys); "No More Heroes" which was written by Lindy Robbins, and "Beautiful" which again was written by Ryan Tedder.

Mark Feehily recently commented: "We wanted the first single from our new album to be somewhere between the Westlife sound our fans know and love, and the new direction we're heading in. We've been experimenting with a fresh vibe on this record. After 11 years we see this as phase two of the Westlife story."

Westlife shoot new video for Where We Are in Iceland

WE FOLLOW WESTLIFE TO FROZEN WASTES FOR SHOOT

When Westlife called and invited us to jump on a plane with them for their new video shoot, we raced home to pack our bikinis.

Imagine our shock when we arrived at the airport for the What About Now shoot and Mark Feehily asked: "I hope you haven't forgotten your thermals."

Our dreams of a tropical island were dashed as we headed to minus 10 degrees of frost in Iceland - a million miles away from the cosy X Factor studio where they performed last night. Thanks, boys.

"Sorry, girls," Mark grinned after noticing our blue fingers as we sat on top a stunning glacier.

"I was listening to the song and it spontaneously came into my head that it would be nice to film it in front of ice.

"If you remember Die Another Day, the Bond film, it's like the contrast of the ice and the really modern things like the sexy, fashionable clothing and cars."

Rockier Or modern heaters maybe? Ever the gents, Nicky Byrne gave us giant duvet coats like theirs to keep us warm.

Simon Cowell ordered them to ditch the old look and gave them a surprise X Factor makeover for the rockier single What About Now, out today.

Shane Filan said: "Simon said he was going to play us something a bit rocky as an example of 'This is the sort of sound you guys should think about.' "

Kian said: "We thought, 'Oh God, he's going to play us something like Nickelback.' But we were blown away and we rang him back and said: "We love it. We want to record that same track."

We had a special preview of the band's new album, Where We Are, out November 31, over some Icelandic grub.

Their new sound is really fresh and mature. We think the fans will love it. Shane added: "We wanted a great album and we feel we've achieved that."

X Factor? We're terrified! Westlife scared stiff as they follow Robbie and Whitney onto the 'cursed slot' on Sunday's show...

Robbie Williams was bug- eyed and sweaty. Whitney Houston lost her dress and struggled to speak. Even the nation's new sweetheart Cheryl Cole has been derided for poor vocals and a ridiculous outfit.

It's fair to say the seasoned performers have not performed brilliantly on this year's X Factor. So it's not surprising that Westlife are a little nervous about their appearance on Sunday night.

It's their first gig since getting back together after a year off and they will be showcasing what they have promised is a new sound.

'There is always something a little bit scary about the X Factor stage,' says the band's Mark Feehily. 'It's so huge and you have the judges in front of you. It's like being a teenager at your first audition.

'It's strange - we've performed some massive gigs and huge TV shows but X Factor always makes me a little bit more nervous than anything else we do.'

Really, Westlife should have nothing to fear. These were the judges, after all, who gave a standing ovation to Britney Spears after her laugh-out-loud bad performance last season.

Plus Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell will laud this group to the skies whatever happens; one is their manager, the other works for their record label.

Westlife have already appeared more times than anyone else on the hit ITV show - as performers, mentors and even judges. Simon has also ensured the new single What About Now is already recognisable for X Factor fans by featuring it several times as background music on the show.

Simon is said to have loved the new single so much that he even rushed them on to the X Factor this weekend, although they were originally due to appear in a month's time.

'He went berserk and said it's too big a song - I want to get them on the show as soon as possible,' says Kian Egan.

Such is the power of the X Factor that performances from it have already produced the two biggest selling singles of the year from last year's winner Alexandra Burke and judge Cheryl Cole.

In order to get on to the X Factor gold rush there was a hurried change in release schedules with the band putting the finishing touches to their album just a few hours before flying to Iceland on Monday to shoot the video for the song which will now be released on Sunday.

But perhaps the nerves reveal just how important this comeback gig is.

'Sunday night could determine the next 18 months of our lives,' says Shane Filan, 30. 'It's going to be very important to see how the single charts and then the album. Going on X Factor is like having an album launch in front of 14 million people.'

Westlife have had 14 UK No1 singles and sold 40 million records worldwide.

Only Elvis Presleyand The Beatles have had more UK Number 1s than Westlife.

Brought together by Louis Walsh as a replacement for his hit band Boyzone they went on to be his most successful act.

A phenomenon among boybands, they have stuck together through thick and thin - even surviving the departure of band member Brian McFadden - to clock up 11 years together. But were they still enjoying it?

Many, including the band themselves, were beginning to wonder if they were running out of steam. Their last single, Us Against The World reached only number eight in the charts two years ago - a career low.

What's more Take That and Boyzone had both reunited and were proving to be able rivals in the manband stakes.

'There were a few things we knew we needed to change,' says Nicky Byrne, 31, who, despite being a father of two-year-old twins, looks as clean cut and baby-faced as when the group first started.

'Like people in every job we were feeling snowed under and a bit stale. When you are in the public eye you really have to believe in what you are doing. What people don't realise is we are our own worst critics.

'I think if you've been around for as long as we have, you can be guilty of being predictable. When you do nine albums in ten years, by the time you are on your sixth album the team that are providing you with material may have dried up.'

Mark, 29, who along with Shane sings most of the group's vocals, adds: 'I know it sounds crazy but I had even started to feel my voice was getting lost and I was forgetting how to sing.

'Everything was getting in the way; the microphones, the ear monitors, the screaming, it all over-powered me.

'I spent a lot of time on our year off just stripping everything back and sing acapella in my apartment - it was like teaching myself to sing again.'

Key to any changes had to be the songs themselves - although the band have written much of their material, their biggest hits have always come from outsiders. 'We've had songs that I haven't been behind at all,' admits Mark.

Nicky adds: 'We were blessed with amazing songs at the start of our career like Flying Without Wings, songs which immediately put us in the same category as Take That and Boyzone.

'But move on four or five years later and we maybe weren't getting as many songs of that quality and that's when the covers started to take over.'

Ah yes, the covers. Westlife have been criticised in the past for relying on cover versions, as well as doing nothing more than sitting on stools and crooning ballads.

So it is surprising then that their big comeback single What About Now is - drum roll please - a cover. It was originally released in America by rock band Daughtry.

Kian Egan, 29, the unofficial leader of the group is quick to insist: 'It doesn't feel like a cover because it's not known outside the U.S. - and everything else on the album is original material.'

Indeed Simon has given Westlife the Leona Lewis treatment. He flew the band to LA where they were given the same producers and writers as the X Factor winner who has become a global star. And all are certain that this is their biggest and best album to date.

'The whole thing was done in the States with - I hate to say it - better quality producers,' says Nicky. 'We were happy for that. The production speaks for itself. We can't wait for the whole world to hear it.'

Hardcore fans however, don't need to worry too much: 'It's still got plenty of ballads but they just have a fresher feel,' says Kian. Phew.

He, in particular, has a poignant reason for wanting this album to succeed, as he made it while deep in mourning for his beloved father Kevin, who died aged 64 in July, after a year-long battle for survival.

'He had a brain haemorrhage the previous August and they found a massive brain tumour,' he says. 'He had two brain surgeries and enough chemotherapy to kill a horse and everything else. But then there was nothing else to try.'

Kian is perhaps the most controlled of the group, the one who doesn't like to give away too much emotion.

It is clear he is still trying to come to terms with his father's death saying only: 'It's hard to talk about it. It was pretty tough. It feels completely unfair.'

But Shane, a father-of-two who is married to Gillian, Kian's first cousin, says getting back to work was the best thing his friend could do: 'Kevin died just as we were about to go into the studio and we immediately postponed it.

'Kian tried to get us to go without him but we couldn't. It was only when his mum told him, "go on, make your dad proud", that we started working again. I think we all did this for his dad - he was a great man - it means it is extra special.'

There will be more poignancy on Sunday night as the band will be there to support Louis, the man who discovered and nurtured them, as he returns to X Factor after the sudden tragic death of his friend, Boyzone star Stephen Gately, at the age of 33.

'I think it is good we will be there,' says Shane. 'He's still very upset and will be for a very long time. It's so sad. Ronan [Keating] told me: "We can't believe he's gone."

'I rang Louis as soon as I found out and he was in a state, crying and very upset. Of course, we all think about what happened if one of us died. You can't help but think about it as we are so similar to them. I don't know how Boyzone are going to deal with it.'

It's just under a week since all the band joined Louis at Stephen's funeral. Mark says he is still haunted by the service.

'In the middle of the church there was a picture of Stephen smiling and it made me think about his friendly nature and how everywhere we saw him he always had the same little smile for you,' he says.

'Everyone was saying the same thing that day - that they couldn't believe it is true. It is so strange, it still hasn't sunk in.'

Mark, who came out as gay in 2005, says Stephen was also an inspiration to him.

'He was extremely brave,' says Mark. 'He was the first member of a boyband to come out and in hindsight it helped me and probably lots of other gay lads understand their sexuality and come out.

'There is a cliche about gays and every time a celebrity who is admired by millions of people comes out it is one more blow to the negative cliche - and people understand there is not a whole lot of difference between gay people and themselves.'

Despite any sadness, at least on Sunday night, John and Edward - Louis's Irish singing twins - should raise a smile.

The exuberant pair were controversial finalists as they seem unable to hold a tune, but they have proved one of the talking points.

'Their last performance was TV gold,' says Mark. 'They are pure entertainment and I can't wait to see what they get up to on Saturday.'

Of Simon Cowell, who has known Westlife for all of their 11 years in showbusiness, Shane says: 'He's always been the same. Very confident, very business minded and knew exactly what he wanted in life and with the band. Now he's just a lot richer and more powerful.

'He's also always liked to take credit. With the 14 number ones, as far as he is concerned, they are as much his as they are ours. Despite everything he has achieved you always have to give him a pat on the back.

'But he doesn't always get it right. When Louis first got us to audition in front of Simon he didn't like me at all and said I had to go. I'd had a big night and hadn't performed well and Louis was furious with me.

'So nine months later, when we had to go and see him again, we dyed my hair blond and I grew it long. I went in disguise, basically. And Simon told Louis: "I love the new guy." '

Westlife In Iceland Shooting New Video

HUNKS JET OFF AFTER GATELY FUNERAL


Westlife jetted to Iceland yesterday to shoot the video for their new single - the day after attending tragic Stephen Gately's funeral.

The pop sensations flew out 24 hours after Boyzone star Stephen's emotional funeral in Dublin - and sources said the band delayed plans to shoot the video so that they could pay their respects to the singer.

Shane Filan (30), Nicky Byrne (31), Mark Feehily (29) and Kian Egan (29) will use the snowy background of Iceland to record the video for latest single What About Now.

The chart-toppers will launch the single - their first in two years - on Friday in Ireland and next Monday in the UK.

The pop hunks recorded the new song with Steve Robson, who also produced Take That's smash hit Shine.

The Flying Without Wings stars will release their new album - which is tipped to be called Where We Are - on November 30.

Westlife On The X Factor Next Week!

'X Factor' Big Band theme 'confirmed'

Week Three of The X Factor is expected to have a Big Band theme for the fourth consecutive year.

According to the Radio Times, next week's show will feature the remaining ten acts facing "the challenge of singing with a full orchestra".

Michael Buble, who released new single 'Haven't Met You Yet' on Monday, and Westlife, who return with the track 'What About Now?' this month, are rumoured to be the celebrity guests.

This weekend's X Factor will have a Diva theme.

What About Now is the lads' first new track since 2007 - and fans could be in for a mild shock.

A Message About Stephen Gately

We are, like everyone else, in shock today. We met Stephen Gately back in ‘98 when we first started out and since then have had the pleasure of meeting him many times. He and the Boyzone lads paved the way for us as a band. He was a friendly, positive spirit and a passionate performer. Our thoughts are with Andy and the rest of his family, his friends, his legions of fans and of course his bandmates Keith, Mikey, Shane and Ronan who will be devastated at the loss of a truly beautiful person.

Join mega stars Westlife, JLS, Taoi Cruz, Cascada, The Saturdays, The Boulevard and more when they play the Cheerios Childline Concert at The O2, Dublin 18th November 2009. The spectacular show will be the first live public appearance by Westlife since their sold out Croke Park show in 2008 where they played to an audience of more than 82,000.

The event, which is sponsored by Cheerios, is the hottest date in the pop calendar and will be hosted this year by Liam McKenna.

The Cheerios Childline Concert and MCD would also like to acknowledge the sudden and tragic loss of Stephen Gately who was a great supporter of the charity event. Stephen co-hosted the concert twice along with performing a total of 3 times over the past 11 years. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to Andrew Cowels, the Gately Family, Boyzone and Louis Walsh on their tremendous loss.

Childline, which is Ireland’s No.1 children’s charity, hopes to receive over €400,000 from 2009’s concert. In 2008 the event raised €400,000 and, to date, Childline has benefited to the tune of €3 million from the previous concerts which have been held annually since 1997 and have featured such acts as Westlife, Boyzone, Robbie Williams, Girls Aloud, The Script, Shayne Ward, Stephen Gatley, Enrique Iglesias,, All Saints, Ronan Keating, Brian McFadden, Anastasia, Blue, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Five, Sugababes, Busted and many more.

The Cheerios Childline Concert will be televised on TV3 on Saturday 21st November at 6pm.

All parties involved with the Cheerios Childline Concert are providing their services free of charge on the night including artists, organisers and The O2, Dublin.

Doors will open at 6.30pm and fans should note that no queuing will be permitted prior to 6.00pm.

Persons with small children are recommended to purchase balcony tickets. Persons under 18 must be accompanied by a person over 23 years of age.

Happy Birthday Nicky!

A big ‘happy birthday’ to Nicky, who turns 31 today. You’ve been busy leaving messages on the site and in the official forum describing how you’ll be marking the occasion – here’s just a small selection of the things fans are getting up to.

Several fans have sent Nicky cards or presents, including LaurenLovesNicky, Westlife00, Steffy85 and Shaziyya Kara.

Many of you will be holding parties or sleepovers to celebrate Nicky’s birthday and share your memories of the band, such as Westlife_ismylife, Kezzie101, Lisam and XEnglish-RoseX.

Valerie D, Nickyisasexgod and Theresa Smith will all be having a drink to mark the occasion.

Lots of fans are celebrating with a cake, including Mrs Sarlife, Lisam and Emer_Loves_Nicky.

Some fans have put in an extra special creative effort, especially Zazu360, who made a “Nickivent calendar” to count down to Nicky’s birthday, and Nia Byrne, who has written the story of her love of Westlife over the years.

Manbands ready for chart showdown of the year

PREPARE for the biggest chart showdown of the year - as "manbands" WESTLIFE and TAKE THAT go head to head.

TT are in New York putting the finishing touches to new album Circus Live due out on November 30. Westlife have spent a year working on their surprise new venture.

A Westlife insider told me: "Instead of ballads there will be a rockier feel. They are confident they can beat Take That."

Last time the bands went head to head was in December 2006 when Westlife's The Love Album was knocked off No.1 by Take That's comeback album Beautiful World.

At the time TT's Gary Barlow said the Irish lads, including Kian Egan, wouldn't exist without them.

A music industry insider told me: "This could get messy."

Westlife To Perform At The Childline Concert

Solo Cheryl for Childline show - Girls Aloud babe's Irish debut at O2

Pop babe Cheryl Cole will stage her first solo performance in Ireland at the Childline concert, the Irish Daily Mirror can reveal.

The Girls Aloud star has signed up for the massive event and hopes to wow fans with tracks from her new album Three Words.

Organisers were planning to keep the news secret until next month but we can reveal she will be joined by girl band arch-rivals The Saturdays at the bash.

And Ireland's biggest pop act ever, Westlife, will make their stage comeback for their first show since they thrilled a sell-out crowd at Croke Park last Summer.

A show insider revealed last night: "It's going to be the biggest Childline ever with the best line-up of stars. It's a huge coup to get Cheryl Cole making her first solo appearance in Ireland - she will be a massive draw.

"And it goes without saying that Westlife making their comeback at the O2 is a massive thing too."

Cheryl will be desperate to steal the thunder from The Saturdays who have been locked in a chart battle with Girls Aloud for the past year. A source close to the singer revealed: "There is a bit of friction between the two bands to say the least.

"The Saturdays are clearly trying to go after Girls Aloud fans so Cheryl will be out there to really steal the spotlight from them.

"I'm sure there will be an awkward moment if they bump into each other backstage."

Westlife will mark their comeback by closing the show with a series of their biggest hits and new material.

They will perform six songs including two from a new album that they will release early next year.

The band are plotting a major comeback after taking a year off to concentrate on family life.

Singer Shane Filan told the Irish Daily Mirror: "We can't wait to get back on the stage. We feel we have our strongest material for years.

"It was fantastic to have a bit of normality for a year but now we're itching to get back. Our new album is going to be entirely new music - there will be no covers."
