1st three singles went straight to #1: "Swear It Again" (March 1999); "If I Let You Go" (August 1999); "Flying Without Wings"(October 1999).

First No.1 artist of the new millennium with their double-A-side single, "I Have a Dream" / "Seasons in the Sun", which knocked Cliff Richard's "The Millennium Prayer" off the top spot.

November 2000: duet with Mariah Carey on the Phil Collins classic "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)" and the ballad "MyLove" (both reached #1).

In 2001: launched their first world tour, unofficially nicknamed "The No Stools Tour", after their reputation for performing whilst perched on stools!

November 2001: 3rd album "World of Our Own".

Singles from this album: "Uptown Girl", "Queen of My Heart" and "World of Our Own" all went to #1. This album led to their 2nd tour(Europe and UK).

November 2002: released ''Greatest Hits album, 'Unbreakable - The Greatest Hits Vol. 1', amidst rumours of a split.

October 2002: first single from this album, "Unbreakable". 2003: toured the UK and Europe with the greatest hits, and still shrugged off rumours of a split.

On 9 March 2004, just three weeks prior to embarking on their fourth world tour, Bryan McFadden left the band to spend more time with his family and work on solo projects.

November 2004: released 'Allow Us to Be Frank', a Rat Pack-inspired album. Before the album release, Westlife jetted up and down the UK to find "the perfect fan" to help promote the album and, after X-factor style auditions, they found Joanne Hindley (who later appeared on X-factor).

2006: signed a brand new FIVE ALBUM deal with Sony/BMG. November 20th 2006: released their 8th studio album, 'The Love Album', consists of all covers of love songs - biggest selling album in 2006 for SonyBMG, selling 1 million copies. First single from

'The Love Album' was a cover version of Bette Midler's classic "The Rose", which became their 14th UK #1 single

Have performed duets with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Mariah Carey, Donny Osmond, Lulu, Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Ronan Keating. Claudia Schiffer and Vinnie Jones have alsostarred in their music videos.

Westlife fans of JLS

Old timers to the pop charts Westlife have said that they like the music of JLS or that of Busted and McFly.

Westlife’s Mark Feehily has said: “We love them. Ever since we started there’s been a McFly or Busted or JLS. There’s space for everyone.”

I’m sure that the Westlife boys have nothing to fear from all the new groups that keep popping up even if they are all in competition with each other for album and single sales.

But I think that Westlife have been around long enough that they seem to have worked out what works in a song.

Well good luck for Christmas

Westlife: 'We're over breaking America'

Westlife have insisted that they are no longer concerned with breaking America.

The Irish boyband cracked the US Top 20 with their debut single 'Swear It Again' in 2000, but have never scored a follow-up hit across the pond.

Their latest album Where We Are features production from several prestigious American producers, including Ryan Tedder and Brian Kennedy, prompting rumours that they are plotting another assault on the lucrative US market.

However, group member Mark Feehily claimed that this is merely a coincidence.

"We looked outside the box on this album and that brought us to America as well as other places in the world - London, Ireland, everywhere. It wasn't a conscious decision to break the States or anything," he told DS.

"With America, we're over the fact that we haven't broken it. If it ever comes up as an opportunity, we'll definitely take it, but we don't design things to try and break America anymore."

Westlife's Where We Are LP charted at number two behind Susan Boyle's I Dreamed A Dream on yesterday's UK albums chart.

Westlife say they are closer than ever

Pop group Westlife have said that they are now closer than they have ever been, following recent tragedies and losses in their lives.

Speaking to Sky News, Shane Filan said that Stephen Gately's death had an impact on the group.

He said: "As a band we've got closer in the last three or four months. We're closer than we've ever been."

Advertisement"When something is taken away from you, or someone like Stephen that was looking forward to his next album, and you know he can't do that now, it kind of puts things into perspective a lot."

Group members Kian Egan and Nicky Byrne also lost their fathers in the past year.

Byrne said: "I think we're all looking forward to the next year, to be honest."

"There are times when you look back at it and think, 'Should I be enjoying myself?' That's part and parcel of it."

"It's certainly better than sitting at home and doing nothing but crying, because I've done all my crying, I just can't cry anymore."

WESTLIFE: NO 1 ALBUMS ARE MORE IMPORTANT

WESTLIFE have given up caring about No 1 singles, and their boss Simon Cowell agrees.

Despite racking up 14 chart-toppers over the decade, the Irish lads – set to crash the top 10 with new album Where We Are – believe the life of the old-fashioned single is over.

Shane Filan, 30, said: “Getting the album to No 1 is more important than having a No 1 single for us and Simon agreed.

He pushed us to make a great album. He agreed we needed to up our game and not to record as many covers. We needed to get back to making great pop music.”

The quartet’s new opus features a more mature pop sound, an idea masterminded by the X Factor guru, 50.

Shane explained: “Simon got us in with everyone we wanted to work with. And we only hired producers we haven’t worked with before.

“It shows in the quality of the music and as a result, a lot of the songs are more up-tempo.

“Simon and Louis Walsh think it’s the best album we’ve ever made.”

Westlife are back after a year out from music but they believe that in that time Simon has become even more powerful.

Shane said: “It seemed impossible for him to get any bigger. But we look at him as a record boss rather than this global superstar.

“We tease him that Westlife was always his first real success and that he made his first major millions off of us.”

Where We Are is out now.

The Dundalk Democrat has five copies of one of the most anticipated albums of 2009 to give away, Westlife's brand new 'Where We Are'.

The album is the tenth album in the career of the most successful Irish pop band ever.

In this week's edition of the Dundalk Democrat, December 9, readers will have a chance to win one of five new albums that we have to give away.

So for your chance to win a copy of 'Where We Are' read the Dundalk Democrat next week.

According to Mark Feehily, the album will be packed full of brand new original songs, as well as a couple of remakes and ranges from poppy upbeat tracks to sublime ballads.

The band feel it's one of the best albums of their career to-date and can't wait for you to hear it.

"We know you're excited to hear it too.

"We wanted the first single from our new album to be somewhere between the Westlife sound our fans know and love, and the new direction we're heading in. We've been experimenting with a fresh vibe on this record. After 11 years we see this as phase two of the Westlife story."

Where We Are - your thoughts...

As you all know, Westlife’s new album 'Where We Are' was released on Monday, and you’ve been letting us know your first impressions of the new songs. Here’s what a few of you are making of the album so far:

gemsywemsy - 'The whole album is just amazing. I hope they get a number one, but if they don't the lads should be so, so proud that they have made such a fabby album. Artists always say, "This is our best album yet" But the lads speak the truth. V.V.V. proud to be fan. Well done boys!!!'

jo5269 - 'Amazing, Astonishing, Astounding, Remarkable, Wonderful, Incredible, Startling, Marvellous, Miraculous, Surprising, Mind-Blowing, Staggering. Yes, I kinda like the new album....'

Scousebird - 'After so long, it's so nice to hear the lads again. I have to say 'Leaving' and 'The Difference' are the best! 'No More Heroes' is a beautiful as well. And 'Reach Out' is the one I am humming the most at work.

'See You Again' has a real military feel to it, like it would be played when troops are deployed in the army on assignment and all the family see you off-I really get that feeling on this song!

Overall, the whole album is really inspirational. I am really looking forward to next tour too!'

KinkysIrishSmile - 'Class... absolutely amazing!!!!! 110% LOVE it!!! Can't wait to hear you perform the songs live!'

angelwest - 'Well, what can I say, another platinum performance from all of you. Exceptional vocals on every track and to choose just one as a favourite would be impossible. I'll see you again makes me cry and alot of the others have potential single written all over them, this is just the kind of album that could help you get closer to your dream off 20 No 1's. Where we are has a fantastic intro and should def be released as a single, don't let excellent songs like How to break a heart, the difference and reach out linger as album tracks, hit singles if ever I heard one. Album now on permanent loop on my iPod, I just love it!! Amazing, Fantastic, Brilliant etc, etc not enough words in any language to describe how good it is, everyone buy it NOW!!!'

If you haven’t yet got your hands on the great new album, what are you waiting for! Follow the links below to grab your copy now...
