Post Of The Week: Week 8

Here’s our topic theme for this week: when did you first become a Westlife fan and why? We’re looking forward to reading all your stories over in the forum.

Last week, we asked you to tell us about the times you’ve heard a Westlife song played somewhere unexpected or that’s made an impact on you. A big thanks to everyone who contributed their memories. Here’s one of our favourites, from Scousebird.

“I couldn't really narrow it down to be honest. Westlife always seem to be playing at different times. I spent the entirety of my teens (now I'm 21) and growing up really-having Westlife around. I always remember 'Angels Wings' being a special song for my Mum (especially where Mark sings 'God sent you to me on Angels Wings' because my little Sister has Cerebral Palsy and is blind and also she's Epileptic so when she used to have fits-Mum used to play the Coast to Coast album to her and it used to soothe her and help her come out of her seizures so that album is quite special really. 'Unbreakable' was playing in the pub when I met my Fiance and we are getting married on 10/04/2010. I could go on forever to be fair.

I remember Us Against The World coming on the radio at work once (I work as a Nurse) and I was singing along looking after someone who was very poorly and although they weren't really able to talk to me...the words seemed to fit with the moment.......

Cause it's us against the world
You and me against them all
If you listen to these words
Know that we are standing tall
I don't ever see the day that
I won't catch you when you fall
Cause it's us against the world tonight

Seems to fit with making someone better as an alternative to it's definitive meaning which is love between to people that for some reason can't be together-which is what I am guessing that the Westlife lads and Arnthor Birgisson, Rami Yacoub, Savan Kotecha meant it to mean.”

Post of the Week: Week 7

This week, we want to know what’s been the strangest/funniest/most enjoyable/most touching time and place you’ve ever heard a Westlife song played. Head to the forum to join in the discussion – we’re looking forward to reading your stories.

Last week we asked which five Westlife songs you’d like the boys to perform at a private gig for you and why. We’ve picked out one of our favourites, by Evita_WL, below, and you can check out everyone else’s responses in the forum.

"My friend, Carla, and I did this before! Because of the break WL are on, we were kind of sad that there wasn't gonna be a new Westlife album, so we decided to make a cd for each other. We put the songs on the cd that meant most for us and and also gave a reason for why we'd chosen those particular songs!
Here are the ones that we'd both like to hear the lads sing:

1) World of Our Own - Cos that's were Carla and I spend most of our time
2) Hey Whatever - This song was chosen because of the line "What connot be proved, can still be true" It's a little bit of a practical joke between us, but whenever I hear it, I have to think of the fun we always have!
3) The Dance - Because this song was sung live by the lads on tour in 2006. That's when Carla and I first met, (and first went to a concert together) and when we had a blast walking around in Dublin, discovering the city. It was the best time!
4) If I Let You Go - Cos it's one our favourites, and Carla likes in particular, because Kian gets to sing bits of it now
5) What Makes a Man - Cos this is my personal favourite to hear live, and WMAM was kind of mine and Carla's Croke Park moment. I couldn't be there, because I has exams But during this song, Carla called me, so I kind of could hear and enjoy it too. That was amazing!

So those are the 5 songs that WL can sing if they ever give us a private concert!"

Nicky & Shane To Participate In Match For Charity

Heroes unite for charity match

by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

SOME of the world's greatest footballers are set to grace Goodison Park, Prenton Park and Anfield in a massive fund-raising initiative by former Liverpool star Jason McAteer.

The Reds hero, 37, who helped raise $550,000 for victims of the 2004 tsunami, has arranged three star-studded football matches to be played at each of Merseyside's three major football grounds, with local children benefiting.

The organisers hope to attract names like Zinedine Zidane, Oliver Kahn, Lothar Matthaus and Marcel Desailly to the first clash, to be staged at Goodison Park on Saturday May 23.

The three-match event has been labelled CAUSE – Children's Aid Using Soccer Events – and the three designated charities to benefit will be Liverpool Unites, Save The Children and The Prince's Trust.

Money will also be made available to each of the staging clubs for their own charitable purposes.

Co-organiser Dave Lockwood said: “We raised in excess of $550,000 last time.

“It is dangerous to set numbers, but I think we would hope to raise $1m over three games this time.”

McAteer has joined forces with former team-mate Steve McManaman to attract some of the most prestigious names in football to the trio of matches.

McAteer said: “We only got the go-ahead for the game on Tuesday but we have been going through Macca's little black book ever since.

“We have spoken to showbiz stars like Gordon Ramsay, Tim Lovejoy and Chris Evans, while Westlife stars Nicky Byrne and Shane Filan have already confirmed their participation in the first match.

“The concept of the game is to get the three clubs uniting together in a common cause.

“Four legends from each of the three clubs will form a Merseyside team, against a European All Stars team.

“The event will be an entertainment showpiece as well as a football match.”

McAteer recently made a personal trip to Banda Ache to see how the Tsunami Aid money was being spent – but it was a tragedy closer to home which inspired him to launch CAUSE.

He said: “When Rhys Jones was shot and killed it touched everyone. His parents have maintained the utmost dignity at an incredibly difficult time and they hope to spread positive messages across the country, educating young people of the dangers of knife and gun crime.

“They are looking to build a youth centre for local children so we offered to help with that as well.

“Benefiting Liverpool Unites sort of made sense.”

The second match will be played at Tranmere Rovers later this year with Liverpool staging a third game in 2010.

Post Of The Week:Week 5

For the latest Post Of The Week discussion, we want to know about the friendships you've made through being a Westlife fan. Maybe you've got to know lots of new people on the forum, or have got chatting to other fans at a concert. Perhaps a shared love of Westlife has brought you and a work colleague or school friend closer! Let us know over in the forum now.
Last week, we asked what your favourite piece of Westlife merchandise is. We also wanted to know what new piece of merchandise you'd like to bring out. Our members came up with some great answers, which you can read in the forum. Here's one of our favourites, from Fiona1.

"I have two favourites, 1. The Westlife mug, the black one with a W on and when you put a hot drink into it, it shows up as 'Westlife', I look forward to every cup of tea! ha ha. 2. Has to be the programmes, the Back Home tour stepped up a notch though, with its plastic pages covered in notes by the lads and fantastic pictures. I always look forward to reading the interviews as they give an insight as to what they have been up to since the last tour.

If we could have a new piece of merchandise I would ask for a usb wrist band with the concert audio on (the pussycat dolls had one for this years tour and went down a treat!) We have never had something with just quality audio from a concert (aside from the dvd)."

5 Years Since Brian McFadden Left Westlife

It's already been 5 years since Westlife became a four-piece when Brian McFadden announced his departure on 9 March 2004.
I will always remember that day,but I think it was for the better for both Westlife and Brian.

Nicky Byrne Goes On The Soup...

Westlife's Nicky Byrne was on-the-soup in Dublin this week but don't worry folks, not a drop was had... The spiky blonde crooner was hanging out with Adrian Kennedy & Jeremy Dixon in Clerys' shop front window (as you do) slurping down his dinner and raising money for the ISPCC...

Out-there radio jocks Adrian Kennedy & Jeremy Dixon ate, slept, broadcast & lived 24-hours-a-day in the window of Clerys Department store on O'Connell Street this week, all in aid of charity and good will toward their fellow man...

Whilst in their human aquarium they had numerous celebrity guests visit their glass tomb as they broadcast their popular FM104 chat show live and unabashed... Guests such as Nicky Byrne, Louis Walsh, Keith Duffy, and many more kept the two DJs busy during their Big Brother-esque surreal sojourn from reality.

Apart from a Nintendo Wii and the odd celeb caller, the late-night talkers were kept entertained by thousands of well wishers and acting-the-mickey messers who pressed up against the shop's windows to either pass-on messages of support or simply give them a bit o' abuse. Well, this is Dublin after all... Wha are ye like?

Westlife's Nicky showed-up with a bottle of Champers for the two lads last Tuesday night and even stayed on for a bowl of hot soup prepared by his genial yet slightly stir-crazy hosts... Of course hardcore Westlife fans turned-up in their hundreds and went nuts with their idol just feet away in the window... Spit on me Nicky!

Comedic and courageous Adrian & Jeremy lived in Clerys window all this week while broadcasting on FM104... Their imprisonment ends tonight (Friday) so try to get down there and see them off - even throw a few bob in the buckets for The ISPCC... Go on!

Westlife's Nicky has a dinner with dozens of shoppers

By Adrian Kennedy

We're FM104 DJs, Get Us Out Of Here! Well, that's the way we were feeling earlier today as the 104-hour challenge in the Clerys window began to take its toll both physically and mentally.

What a weird feeling it was this morning, waking up and seeing the GPO outside our bedroom window, and people pressed against the window taking photos of us sleeping.

Along with my colleague Jeremy, we've been living, working, eating and sleeping in the window and today we were asked to do our first task: Adrian Kennedy v Jeremy Dixon in a game of Jenga. The loser would have to perform a forfeit -- the forfeit in this case was a spray-on tan performed live in the window in front of a street of on-lookers.

After a spine-chilling game of Jenga, watched by more than 150 spectators, I emerged the victor.

Suffice to say, Jeremy now looks well and truly tangoed with FM104 Phoneshow listeners now nicknaming him the oompa-loompa DJ.

Loyal

Following those high jinks, our celebrity guest joined us for dinner.

Tonight it was Westlife's Nicky Byrne. His loyal female fans began queuing outside from early morning.

By the time he arrived, at 6pm, there was a frenzy. Hundreds of FM104 listeners and Nicky fans catching a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity -- Adrian, Nicky and Jeremy eating their dinner.

During the show, things went a bit crazy outside our studio window.

We had an Al Pacino look-a-like perform ballroom dancing, a topless man with FM104 printed on his chest and an interesting character who spent 20 minutes freestyle dancing for the spectators.

Time to get some sleep. We only wish the road-sweeping truck would stop driving by.

Don't forget you can send your text donation of €2 any time, by texting the word CHILD to 57080.

Louis parties in city with his team of X Factor fixers

X Factor judge Louis Walsh hit the town over the weekend, with some of his pals from the hit UK TV show.
The Westlife manager told the Diary how he brought over some of his friends who work with him on the popular singing contest to say 'thank you' for their support on the programme. "There's four people who work really closely with me on the show -- they're like my eyes and ears -- and basically to make sure that everything runs smoothly," he said.
He's also busy plotting the next step for his new girlband, who met with music executives from two major record companies recently.
As well as spending weeks rehearsing their singing and dance moves, they've been busy meeting with stylists to discuss devising a trendy image.
Busy band member Jodi Albert will be swapping vows with her Westlife fiance, Kian Egan in Barbados, and has invited her girlband pals over to watch her getting hitched.

Post Of The Week:Week 4

Here's this week's brand-new topic: what's your favourite piece of Westlife merchandise? And if they could launch a brand new item, what would you like it to be? Join in the debate over in the forum now.

Last week, we asked which song you'd most like the boys to cover. Our forum members came up with some really varied and interesting suggestions, which you can read here. This is one of our favourite posts, by Jo5269.

"I've been wracking my brain about this one. There are so many amazing songs out there and the lads are so brilliant that I honestly think they could make "mary had a little lamb" sound out of this world. But what would I love to hear them sing? Something with a rock edge, but still ballady - so I'm going with Always by Bon Jovi. I think it would suit their voices, especially Nickys..."
