Westlife have said that they are very excited about their television special with Gay Byrne, which is due to be aired tonight.

Speaking to RTÉ TEN, Nicky Byrne said: "Growing up as a kid Friday night was bath night in our house and we'd come down and my Mam used to say let's go down and watch your uncle Gay Byrne, obviously having the same surname!"

"We never really met him properly, you know, and I mean he really is the king of TV so... I'm delighted to do this, I really am delighted."

Mark Feehily said: "I've grown up in Ireland for the last 30 years so everybody knows how important Gay Byrne is to the whole country."

"He's kind of the voice and the face of an era, of a nation, of my life really."

Westlife talk to HELLO! about rivalry with Take That

Westlife have told HELLO! how they enjoy friendly competition with Take That, who now have ex-bandmate Robbie Williams back in the fold.

"You need competition to keep you on your toes,” Nicky Byrne told HELLO!. "I love Take That and have been a fan since secondary school. Everything those boys do turns to gold and I sometimes look at them and think, ‘I wish we had that song,' but we've done OK.'

They have no intention of becoming a five-piece again like their chart rivals, and wouldn't be inviting ex-bandmate Brian McFadden to join them again.

"He left because he didn't like what Westlife were,” Shane Filan told HELLO!. "Robbie got kicked out of Take That, but Brian left of his own accord. He wasn't happy. If he did come back, we'd be thinking every day, ‘Is he happy with what we're doing now?'”

Nicky reveals how they had dinner with Brian during a recent trip to LA and got on well. "It was great fun,” he said. "He's been out of the band for nearly seven years and I couldn't see him fitting in now.

"We've done more tours without him than Robbie ever did with Take That and we didn't split up after he left. It'd be great to get on stage and do a song with Brian for the fans, but I can't see him rejoining.”

The band, who release new single Safe on November 8 and new album Gravity on November 15, say they are still looked after by Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell.

"Louis is on the phone to us every day,” said Shane. "Simon is also very involved. When he is passionate about something, he'll say, ‘Trust me on this, guys,' but if we're opposed to something, he listens to our opinions. He doesn't need us financially, but he has a genuine love for the band.

"Simon and Louis bitch to each other on The X Factor and they do that in real life, too. They fight tooth and nail, even in front of us, and it's funny to watch.”

And who are they supporting on the reality TV show this year?

"Cher is great because she's different and has that swagger,” said Shane. "Mary has an amazing voice, as well as a great story, and One Direction is a ready-made boyband. Those boys are five Justin Biebers and I reckon they'll sell a lot of albums.”

It looks like Westlife may have more than just Take That to contend with….

Preparations are continuing for this weekend's musical festival in Sligo.

Five 40 ton trucks have already arrived in Sligo to prepare the site for the event. A 30 man crew has started preparing the stage for Westlife and Leonard Cohen.

Music Gower's to Sligo's extravaganza festival are being urged to allow plenty of time to ensure they get the utmost out of their trip to Lissadell house this bank holiday weekend.

Its expected around 30,000 fans will flock to the Yeats County to see West life and Lenora Cohen during the three day event.

Concert goers are encouraged to take ht bus to avoid traffic congestion and delays. For those driving by car to Lissadell house there are 2 car parks with free parking at the venue.

Gates open at 4pm for all 3 concerts and patrons are advised to go early to enjoy the food stands across the site.

On Friday night it's very a family affair as the supporting acts include Kian Egans wife Jodi from girl band Wonderland-and Shane Filans relative Glen Call kick off the proceedings at 7pm while westlife take centre stage at 8.30. The concert is due to finish up at approximately 10.15.

While music legend Leonard Cohan takes to the stage at 7.30 pm each night with the event due to conclude just before 11 o'clock.

Isabella Cassidy the manager of Lissadell house says she is very excited about the event.

No change, and it's for the better

THERE are some things you can bet your mortgage that Westlife will do at a concert. Brilliant key changes, numerous costumes and slick dance routines are the glue that has held Mark Feehily, Shane Filan, Kian Egan and Nicky Byrne together over these past 12 years.

What has changed about Westlife is the appearance of electric guitars in their set, one of which Nicky played during an inspired cover of Sex On Fire by Kings of Leon.

Featuring more electric guitars were Bristol's very own The Fuel, who had won an Evening Post competition to be first support act here and they savoured every minute. With their long flowing hair and confident swaggers, this is the kind of stage these boys belong on.

The second support act was Wonderland, an immaculately styled girlband managed by Kian and Louis Walsh.

Westlife appeared on the stage in front of the Atyeo Stand to rapturous applause, launching straight into Where We Are, the title track from their latest album.

Pyrotechnics were fired into the air, and returned two songs later for When You're Looking Like That, when the band members could first show off their dance moves. These dance moves returned for Uptown Girl, a cover of the Billy Joel classic which Westlife released as a charity single for Comic Relief in 2001.

What followed can only be described as a comedy interlude, as Nicky told a joke about Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary and then read out some of the banners in the crowd.

If people still carried lighters to concerts, they would have been in the air for Flying Without Wings. This is 2010, so a vuvuzela blown by one fan joined the calls for an encore, which Westlife appeared for in Rat Pack-style suits to sing I'll See You Again and You Raise Me Up.

This was a fantastic concert by a band who adapt with the times but never change the aspects that made them one of the most successful and popular acts of all time.

Hi Guys!

Just a note to say how delighted we are with the tour so far. It's been our most enjoyable tour by far and we feel you enjoyed it in a big way too!! We can't wait now for the summer shows and of course our show in Sligo on 30th of July. That is going to be a very special night for us!

Also thank you to everyone who supported soccer aid this year. It was a massive success for UNICEF and we were so chuffed to be involved and of course it was great to beat England! Third time lucky I suppose.. But on the night I think we deserved the win.

It was amazing to play at Old Trafford and even more amazing to play with all the soccer legends! Myself and Nicky really enjoyed it and made a lot of new friends... Bring on 2012!!!

Westlife to Play in JP McManus Invitational Pro-Am 2010

Westlife have confirmed they’ll play in the JP McManus Invitational Pro-Am on the 5th and 6th July 2010.

The band will join a host of leading celebrities including Hugh Grant, Samuel L. Jackson, Aidan Quinn, Michael Flatley and Kyle McLachlan along with sporting greats such as AP McCoy, Martin O’Neill, Niall Quinn, Paul O’Connell, Harry and Jamie Redknapp at Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort next July.

The aim of the JP McManus Invitational Pro-Am is to support mid-western charities and groups in their work with the underprivileged and disadvantaged. All proceeds are donated in their entirety towards the development of these services.

Queues to see Westlife come home; CONCERT

WESTLIFE fans were queuing in the early hours yesterday to snap up tickets for a homecoming concert.

Hundreds lined up from 4am to make sure they got their hands on passes for the gig at Lissadell House in Sligo on Friday, July 30.

Westlife manager Louis Walsh said Lissadell could become the next Slane.

He added: "Shane Filan told me, 'I want to play in my home town' and I said, 'OK, let's do it'. Lissadell looks just brilliant and it will be as good as Slane."

It is more than seven years since Westlife played in Sligo and fans camped outside Third Wave music shop on Sligo's O'Connell Street to get their tickets.

Around 1,500 tickets were sold within five hours for the 10,000-capacity gig which precedes two nights of Leonard Cohen at Lissadell.

Tickets priced from EUR55.50 including booking fee are available from Ticketmaster and all usual outlets.

It was so important to sing for Gerry.. we rented a jet to make sure we got to the funeral on time;

WESTLIFE EXCLUSIVE: THEIR SADNESS

WESTLIFE were so desperate to sing at their friend Gerry Ryan's funeral they hired a private plane to bring them to Dublin in the morning and back to Nottingham afterwards for a gig that evening.

Singer Shane Filan revealed how they had become very close to him over the past few years and were determined to give him a vocal send-off in the church.

He said: "It was one of the hardest gigs we ever had to do. Standing by his coffin with his children in front of us, I found myself getting very emotional.

"I get emotional when I see kids in situations like that, probably because I now have three of my own. It changes the way you look at things - the way you look at the world.

"His daughter Bonnie and her pop band had also toured with us before.

"Gerry always supported us and he was very proud of us being Irish. We met him over the years, going on his programme and all that and he was a very sound guy. We became very close over the last few years. He was always brutally honest and would tell us in no uncertain terms if he didn't like a certain song.

"It was a lot of hard work to get back for the funeral, and even though there was a gap in the volcanic ash cloud, we didn't want to rely on an airline. We didn't want to risk it. It was worth every penny to hire the jet.

"After the funeral we went straight back to the airport and within a few hours we were performing on stage in Nottingham."

Ironically, Westlife had never sung at a funeral until Kian Egan's dad died in Sligo last year. Then Nicky Byrne's dad passed away and they performed at his father's funeral in Baldoyle.

And the third one was Gerry's send-off. Shane added: "We have sung at three funerals in the past 12 months, and had literally never done one before.

"They say that bad things happen in threes, don't they? Let's hope that's it for now. I think it also brought it all back for Kian and Nicky, they started remembering their own family grief."

And the singer said he thoroughly enjoyed the 12 months the band took off last year. "For me, a holiday was staying at home with my family.

I've spent most of my adult life so far t r ave l -ling on planes. Our last child was on the way and it was great to be at home. The only trip we took was to Kian and Jodi's wedding in Barbados.

He added: "I also set up a soccer team with my mates and we played every week, I played a lot of golf with my father-in-law and also did some planning and organising with my brother Finbar in the construction company we've set up.

"Three of the four planning applications we put in for have now been granted. It's a good time to build, things are half the price they were a couple of years ago.

"We're about to start building a nursing home and a small shopping centre, so it's going very well."

Shane was astonished after the band took a year off to discover they were probably more popular than ever.

When we spoke Westlife were in the middle of a three-night run in London's O2 arena, playing to 18,000 people a night - and getting fantastic reactions. "After 12 years it's quite incredible.

The average age of our fans now seems to be between 25 and 30. Looking out at the audience recently I realised that the fans are now so much older. There were people in their 30s and their 40s.

"It used to be all children, now only about 10% of the audience are kids. It's all changed over the years. Every night they hold their camera phones up in the air and sing along to Flying Without Wings. It's mind-blowing.

"As for the future, we just want to continue selling out concerts and making hit records.

"We're actually having a meeting today with Sony to discuss the next album, we're that far ahead of ourselves.

Louis Walsh has already come up with half a dozen songs for it, and I'm pretty sure that several of them will make it onto the album. But we all have an input into it, ourselves, Louis and Simon Cowell.

"It's always a team effort. Except I remember when Louis suggested that we record You Raise Me Up, I didn't want to do it at all. I felt it was a bit too gospel or something for us. But he told me to just trust him, that it was going to be one of our biggest ever hits. And he was dead right. It just goes to show.

"We'd like to branch out sometime and do a live album or an Unplugged album. In fact we might kill two birds with the one stone and maybe record a live Christmas album. I think then fans might like that. But it's going to be a regular album this year. Then we'll think about doing something different for 2011."

And two highlights for Shane this summer will be the band's return to Croke Park on June 5 and at Lissadell House in Sligo on July 30. It's seven years since Westlife - then a five-piece with Brian Mc-Fadden - performed at the local stadium in Sligo.

"But this will be a real homecoming in the grounds of then historic house that was closely associated with WB Yeats. They will be performing to a crowd of around 12,000 fans.

"I'm looking forward to both gigs, Croke Park last year was one of the highlights of my life. I had to keep pinching myself on stage to prove that it was for real. But this will be the first time we've performed in Sligo since Brian left.

"So it will probably be a bit emotional because of that and the fact that it's hometown for three of us - myself, Kian and Mark. I think the promoter John Reynolds is trying to turn it into something like a mini Slane, with Leonard Cohen performing there on two other nights. I know the place well, only six months ago I did a tour of the house with my mother.

"At the time I had no idea we were going to be playing there this year. It's a really beautiful place. I love the whole idea of concerts there, and it will all be great for Sligo."

He also said he would love to meet up with former member Brian Mc-Fadden, who is back in Ireland at the moment and wants to try to catch one of their shows and meet up.

He added: "We haven't heard from him for a while so it would be great to see him. He's always welcome, we still love to see him. We have a brand new stage show at the moment and have considerably upped the ante. You need to keep improving and developing all the time.

"It's like a new band. You have to give people something new every time you go out on tour. You have to keep it fresh."

And he laughed while recalling Nicky Byrne's recent accident after a spot of horseplay in their hotel with Kian Egan went very, very wrong.

"Kian is always up for messing, for doing things like arm-wrestling. He can get a bit rowdy at times. Basically, what happened was that he had Nicky in a headlock and tried to lift him up. But Nicky fell and landed on this glass table. His head swelled up like a balloon and there was blood everywhere.

"I started to panic and took him straight to A&E at six in the morning.

They fixed him up there, gave him an injection to reduce the swelling and stitched up his wound. I was very worried, but I told him it was more about all the gigs we had coming up! He now thinks he's some sort of a tough guy with his scar!" And the singer also revealed how they spent two weeks rehearsing their stage moves at a dance studio he set up in his Sligo home.

He said: "The guys were moaning about having to go to London to rehearse in a dance studio there so I suggested this huge room with wooden floors I have over my garage.

We installed some mirrors and it was perfect. Everybody was happy. Nicky and his family came up form Dublin. He actually loves being in Sligo, even though he's a real Dub.

"We then decided to do the full dress rehearsals in City West in Dublin, so we didn't have to leave the country at all to prepare for the tour. And no, I don't use the dance studio to rehearse by myself. No solo stuff involved there at all. We actually only used it for the Westlife moves. There's definitely no solo Jacko thing to it."

And with his eldest daughter preparing to start junior school later this year, Shane revealed how he actually gets back home more these days than he used to in the past.

He added: "Nicole is getting ready to start school and I definitely want to be around more than I used to be. We can fly to Sligo and spend a few days there at a time now. We haven't been affected much yet by the volcanic ash. Let's hope it stays that way!"

They may have been going strong for 12 years, but Irish pop sensations Westlife can still effortlessly whip a crowd into a frenzy.

At Birmingham’s LG Arena last night, the lads showed other boy bands just how it’s done – and what has brought them such longevity in the music industry.

From the start, the adoring sell-out crowd was on its feet singing and dancing to some if the group’s best known hits and a few surprise songs too. To ear-piercing screams and impressive lighting effects, the boys burst on to the stage with a bang to the title track of the tour, Where We Are.

Fans were transported back to the beginning of the group’s career with a performance of their first hit Swear it All Over Again, as well as other older favourites such as Uptown Girl.

The lads at one point took the tempo down a notch for a quieter set, which included Barry Manilow hit Mandy and If I Let You Go, where the four piece- made up of Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan and Mark Feehily – got the chance to show off their full vocal range.

Best known these days for being perched on stools and belting our ballads, the band showed off a different side when they performed an up-tempo mash up of pop hits.

This kind of medley has become a popular staple of most recent Westlife shows, and last night was no exception.

Fans were moved when the boys returned for their encore, dressed in smart suits, to perform their smash hit ballad Flying Without Wings.

You Raise Me Up – a song which has been covered more than 125 times – brought the curtain down on the evening along with deafening applause.

Westlife have grown up but it looks like this is one boy band that will be around for a good few years yet.

Pop group Westlife are set to take over RTE 2fm on Bank Holiday Monday 3 May, hosting three exclusive shows.

Shane Filan said: "We're really getting a taste for working in radio."

"It would be great to talk to people every morning. We much prefer being on this side of the microphone as presenters."

Westlife recorded the exclusive radio shows last week, playing some of their favourite songs and also revealing the Top 5 Westlife songs of all time.

The lads are played RTE 2fm's legendary 'Just A Minute Quiz' with Larry Gogan, as well as hosting a 'Talk to Joe' slot with 'Liveline's Joe Duffy.

Westlife’s new Celebrity Sunday show on 2FM

Westlife fans around the world have responded en-masse to an exclusive Twitter announcement that top Irish boy-band Westlife are to take over RTÉ 2fm for the station’s first ever Westlife Day.

Monday Bank Holiday May 3rd will see all four Westlife members take the DJ hot-seat in 2fm’s Dublin studios for three full and exclusive 2fm shows. Nicky and Shane will take the 9-12 slot, while Mark and Kian will take the 5-7 slot. Meanwhile the entire band will take over the 12 to 3 slot on the day.

Westlife’s Nicky Byrne made Irish web-history recently when his 2fm Celebrity Sunday slots trended at #3 worldwide on Twitter. Westlife Day follows hot on the heels of that success and arrives in the middle to 2fm’s new listener campaign. The new 2fm TV ad, running as part of the current re-launch of the station, is receiving big endorsements on line.

Hi Guys...

It's been a while but thats only because we have been busy putting the WHERE WE ARE tour together! We will be performing songs from our latest album plus all the greats too...we have put modern twists of some of the older ones to shine them up and they are sounding splendid! Its all coming together so get yourself down to the gig if youre not already going anyway!

It's gonna be a blast, look forward to seeing you there!

In other news, we were shocked to hear that the ACTUAL location for our 'What About Now' video is no longer there! It was a massive glacier in Iceland and as a result of a recent volcanic eruption it has gone! Wow scary!

BOYBAND Westlife have released a further 2,000 tickets for their Highland gig – with demand coming from as far afield as New Zealand.
A total of 12,000 fans will now descend on Cawdor Castle on 28 August. Organisers said demand for tickets, which went on sale 11 days ago, was so high they have decided to release more.

Of their original 10,000 allocation, ticketmaster has fewer than 1,000 left.

CK Events director Kenny Cameron said: "Given the rapid uptake of the initial allocation we have decided to release further tickets for the event."

Irish pop stars Westlife to play outdoor concert at Ashton Gate in Bristol

Irish pop group Westlife are coming to Bristol this summer to play a huge outdoor concert at Ashton Gate, the Evening Post can exclusively reveal.

They will perform at the Bristol City ground on Thursday, June 17.

A total of 15,000 tickets were due to go on sale from 7am this morning for the concert, priced between £35 and £50.

Tickets can be bought online at www.ashtongatestadium.co.uk or at www.seetickets.com, or by phoning the stadium hotline on 0871 222 6666 – select option one and then option two, listening out for "concert tickets".

Westlife have sold 43 million records worldwide including 14 UK number ones – a record only bettered by Elvis and The Beatles.

Their biggest hits include Flying Without Wings, If I Let You Go and You Raise Me Up as well as covers of Against All Odds, Uptown Girl and I Have A Dream.

The line-up – Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily and Shane Filan – saw their latest album Where We Are reach number two in the UK albums chart.

Support acts have yet to be confirmed.

The Westlife show is the first concert to be staged at Ashton Gate since Bon Jovi's sell-out show in 2008 and the popular band follow a long line of major acts to have played at the venue in the past decade including The Who, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Meatloaf and Bryan Adams.

Bristol City group managing director Doug Harman said: "We are delighted to be welcoming an act of Westlife's stature to Bristol for what is certain to be another successful and enjoyable summer concert at Ashton Gate Stadium.

"There is sure to be a big demand for tickets and we would encourage anyone who wants to attend to purchase their seats early to avoid disappointment."

The group first formed in July 1998. The original line-up included Brian McFadden, but he left in 2004.

Westlife is the only act in UK history to have their first seven singles go straight to number one, but despite their worldwide success they have only had one American chart hit. Swear it Again made it to 20 in 2000.

The group was originally signed by Simon Cowell and are currently managed by Louis Walsh.

In 2008, they were declared Ireland's ninth richest celebrities under 30 years old, with 36 million euros as a group.

Wheelchair and ambulant disabled tickets should be purchased direct from the stadium. Concert hospitality is also available priced at £120 plus VAT per person on a first-come, first-served basis – to book your table contact the stadium's commercial team on 0871 222 66 66, selecting option three. This offer includes seating in front of the stage, a pre-show meal and souvenir programme.
